The Garagemahal: Phase One, Part B

We're still in Phase One of the garagemahal. But we're in Part B of Phase One. Part B is where nothing much is happening. We're still just a big dirt hole. Our dirt hole just sits there. Mocking me. I'm so big. Yes hole, yes you are. I'm the biggest hole you've ever seen. Don't be so full of yourself. You're nothing compared to the Grand Canyon. But you've never been to the Grand Canyon. See? It mocks me.

Yesterday I took a sledge hammer to the old garage floor. We have to tear that up because it's basically 70 year old concrete floating over an elaborate system of chipmunk tunnels. For some reason that's not considered a structurally sound base on which to build. So since we're tearing it out anyway I smacked at it with a sledge hammer. It was remarkably satisfying. I recommend it highly. Of course today my back hurts a little. The sledge hammer mocks me too.

The guy on the right is my builder. You know in those movies when the cartoon character comes to life and has to live in the real world? I think he might be the human version of Diego, Dora's industrious little cousin from south of the border.

To get ready for this hurry up and wait phase Scott made me help him move a tree.

Move. A. Tree.

Granted it was a smallish Japanese Maple but still a tree. And you know what's hard? Moving a tree. We had to call in reinforcements.

We moved it to a temporary holding facility otherwise known as a baby pool.

Scott's very worried about his tree. He loves that tree. He frets over it. Will it be ok? Is it traumatized by the move? Did we cut too many roots? Will! She! Live!?

So in the immortal words of Casey Kasem: This long distance dedication goes out to Scott, a type-A worrier and lover of vegetation, from his beloved Japanese Maple who is a little brown around the edges and thinks the baby pool is a little trailer-trash for her taste but is still hangin' in there.

From Maple to Scott...

That is quite the big ass pile of debris behind Scott in that one picture!

hahahaha, you have Diego working at your house? You should charge admission to all the toddlers in the neighborhood...

Oh, I know that tree worry so well. I went all cuckoo over a couple of birches in our front yard when we had construction. It was as if i directed all my lack of control over the whole project into those little trees.

I think your maple in a kiddie pool looks like an art installation. You could probably sell it for 10 grand in an art gallery here in LA.

Hold on just one minute. He asked you if you'd help him put a tree in a baby pool to keep it safe. And you said yes. Is that right?

OMG he DOES dress like the cartoon guy....

That was one of my favorite songs back in junior high. I hope it saves your tree!

David Soul enunciates so well! Especially the 't' in "right". He's an English teacher's dream.

I think you should leave the tree in the pool permanently. Just cut a hole in the bottom for the roots to grow out of.

It's whimsical.

I'm hearing that 'Every Woman' song playing in my head now. You moved a tree?

I have a hard enough time pulling a weed.

Oh my goodness, Diego? How funny. And the tree in the pool? No comment.

Did you tell your builder that he reminded you of Diego?

Good luck with the garagemajal!

My husband's ex-wife and her new husband built a ga-rag-Ma-hal, too. It started off as Garag-zilla but then the economy tanked and they scaled back.

Thanks for the memory of David Soul. I don't admit this to many but I used to have that album. I also used to wear plaid flared pants.

Good luck with that garage.

So, when we built our garage in 2005, we had to tear down the old one first. And I'm really glad we didn't try to do it with sledge hammers, as you did, because it turned out the foundation was built to accomodate a little machine shop some prior owners ran out of the old garage. The demolition crew pulled out what I swear were the missing pieces from Stonehenge. I'm pretty sure I saw Jimmy Hoffa's leg sticking out of one chunk.

Anyway, I'll be around to follow the saga....

Well, the Japanese Maple is the King of Trees. They're also touchy little bastards to grow. So I can understand the angst a bit.

And really, why is your builder dressed like he's leading an expedition into deepest Africa? Interesting.
